get fuzzy by darby conley wins reuben award
New York - May 27, 2003 - The daily and Sunday comic strip Get Fuzzy by Darby Conley has been named Best Newspaper Comic Strip of the year by the National Cartoonists Society. The award was announced at the NCS's 57th Annual Reuben Awards Banquet on May 24 at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco. This was Get Fuzzy's first nomination for the award.
Get Fuzzy is a wry portrait of single life, with pets. This bitingly hilarious comic strip by Darby Conley was launched in September 1999, and already appears in 325 newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, New York Daily News and Chicago Tribune. At the center of this warm and fuzzy romp are Rob Wilco, a single, mild-mannered ad executive; Bucky, a temperamental cat who clearly wears the pants in this eccentric household; and Satchel, a gentle pooch who tries to remain neutral, but frequently ends up on the receiving end of Bucky's mischief. Together, this unlikely trio endures all the trials and tribulations of a typical family.
"Well, it was certainly one of the biggest thrills of my life," commented Conley. "To be up on stage receiving an award in front of some of the best cartoonists in the world was strange enough, but to then be congratulated my Matt Groening was downright surreal. I think someone switched our scripts."
Steve McGarry, who writes and illustrates KidCity for United Feature Syndicate and Sesame Workshop, was awarded the Reuben Division Award for Best Newspaper Illustration. Designed to familiarize school-age children with different parts of the newspaper, KidCity appears daily and Sunday in newspapers nationwide.
Born and raised in Manchester, England, McGarry is an accomplished freelance cartoonist and illustrator. He has created several comic strips and newspaper features, including "Diary of Rock & Pop," "Badlands", "Pop Culture" and United Media's Sunday "Biography" feature. In the late 1970s, he designed record sleeves and promotional materials for a host of rock luminaries. His sports and entertainment features continue to appear in magazines and newspapers throughout the world. McGarry was elected NCS President in 2001. He lives in Southern California.
Matt Groening, creator of "The Simpsons," won the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year. For a list of winners in all categories, please visit reuben.org.
